Shortline OKs commuter rate
By Staff Writer ANNEMARIE SCHUETZ

MONTICELLO - Starting yesterday, the commute from Sullivan County to New York City got a little easier on the wallet.

The Shortline Bus System had had a run from Monticello to New York City for years.  But now, thanks to consumer pressure, the company has finally given the county a commuter rate, Shoreline officials said. That translates into a significantly reduced ticket price.

"It’s a substantial savings," said Iris Sandow, a White Sulfur Springs resident who often works in the city.

A one-way regular ticket to New York is $23.65; at the new commuter rate, it only costs $10.75 when you purchase a 10-trip book.  "I think we’re always looking for more opportunities, and we see Sullivan County as an improving marketing tool. We’ve always tried to add service when we can supply it," said Christine Falzone, marketing manager for Shortline, which is based in New Jersey.

A commuter rate was tried in the mid-90s, Falzone said, but was abandoned after a year due to lack of use.  "But with the economic improvement," Falzone said, "we felt it’s time to try again."

But the 2-hour ride, each way, is only for the true road warriors. Four hours a day on the bus takes fortitude.

Nevertheless, Realtor Gene Barbanti of the Barbanti Group in Liberty was enthusiastic.  "That’s wonderful," he said.  "It opens up a whole new job market."

He sees the lower rate as an invitation to new homeowners who want to retain their jobs in the city, as well as second homeowners who might move up permanently.  "For $100 a week they’re commuting ... it gives them an opportunity to have a much better lifestyle."

He said some commuters use the bus time to catch up on reading or to do computer work.

The announcement arrives along with new express bus service to the city.  Two special early buses will depart Monticello at 5:20 and 5:45 a.m. during the work week.

Sandow is very pleased with the new rates and schedule.  "It’s reassuring to know that Shortline is responding to the needs of commuters, she said."
